Why is it not always possible to preserve the nipple-areola complex (NAC)?

During a mastectomy, the areola and nipple are often removed along with the mammary gland for oncological safety reasons.
Breast reconstruction may then require a second step: the reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex, which helps to restore a natural appearance to the breast.

What are the possible options for nipple-areola complex (NAC) reconstruction?

Several techniques are now available to recreate the NAC, providing a final and essential touch to breast reconstruction:

• A surgical technique: the nipple and areola can be reconstructed using a skin graft.¹
• And/or making a tattoo to recreate the appearance of the nipple and areola.¹

Although this step is not mandatory, it is often experienced as a psychological and aesthetic milestone in the reconstruction.

As a plastic surgeon specialized in post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, I want to emphasize the fundamental importance of having appropriate medical devices for the reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex (NAC).
Although often considered secondary, this step is in fact the culmination of the reconstruction for many breast cancer patients.

NAC reconstruction is not merely an aesthetic procedure. It allows the patient to reclaim her body image and symbolically close a painful chapter of her life.
It is precisely at this stage that reconstruction truly takes on its full meaning, by restoring coherence and a natural appearance to the breast area.

CELLIS Nac: An innovative BIOLOGICAL alternative developed by MECCELLIS BIOTECH in collaboration with Prof. Laurent LANTIERI (HEGP - Paris)

Biological approaches are increasing in the field of breast reconstruction. Among these innovations, CELLIS Nac is a medical device designed to provide nipple projection without the need for a skin flap.
It is a 3D porcine dermal matrix intended for direct subcutaneous implantation, offering a potential solution to the limitations of current techniques—particularly in maintaining long-term nipple projection.

  • Clinical Outlook

Thanks to its 3D design, ease of use, and preservation of surrounding tissues, CELLIS NAC could emerge as an alternative to existing surgical techniques. However, dedicated clinical studies will be necessary to confirm its performance and validate its long-term safety.
